Chester Zoo Main Entrance

Chester Zoo is one of the leading wildlife attractions in Britain and has ambition expansion plans which are currently being developed as part of a wider initiative to become one of the leading zoological societies in the world. Ryder Landscape Consultants were appointed by Chester Zoo to develop proposals for a new visitor entrance plaza to replace the ageing existing entrance and open up views into the Zoo for the approaching public. We worked with public artist Chris Bramhall to develop sculptural elements that when installed would draw people’s attention to the entrance plaza from the vast car park beyond. Through a combination of paving patterns, vertical elements, eye catching planting and an artist inspired gateway the Zoo’s new Jubilee Quarter was conceived. Design and implemented was achieved in less than 6 months as it was important to the Zoo that the new entrance be ready in time for the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh’s visit as part of their Diamond Jubilee Tour. The Chester Zoo Jubilee Quarter has resulted in a greatly enhanced visitor experience which the Zoo now plan to build on as part of their wider development proposals
