Chester Blue Coat Primary School
Involving the amalgamation of two schools, Ryder Landscape Consultants worked along side Tweed Nuttall Warburton Architecture to create a new masterplan for the new Chester Blue Coat Primary School and develop proposals for outdoor classrooms, external play areas, habitat areas, new sports pitches and multi-use games area. Constraints on the available land and significant changes in level meant that every part of the site was to be developed in some way and this presented a welcome challenge to our design team.
One of the challenges was that the school sat on a constrained site surrounded by residential developments, innovative solutions were required in order to achieve the necessary outdoor play and sports provision requirements. Retaining walls formed from timber logs allowed us to form creative areas of play in areas challenged by these constraints. The historic nature of the existing school buildings meant that negotiation with the Local Authorities Heritage Office and sensitive restoration proposals were required in order to retain important historic boundary treatments around the site.
